Ribena replaces plastic straws with paper straws

Ribena paper straws

Drinks company Ribena has stopped using plastic straws in its cartons.

The new paper straws were first trialled in Tesco stores in May 2020 but are now a “permanent feature” across all Ribena cartons.

It is expected that the move will save up to 16 tonnes of plastic from being produced per year, as part of Ribena’s ambition to reach 100% sustainable packaging by 2030.

Jo Padwick, Transformation Manager at Suntory Beverage & Food GB&I, said: “It is great to see our years of hard work getting such positive reviews from Ribena drinkers. We have taken into account all of the feedback to help us improve the new paper straw that is now being launched on the range across all stores.”

A full roll-out is expected by April this year.

Plastic straws vs paper straws

One of the most common environmentally friendly alternatives to single-use plastic straws are paper straws. Paper straws break down into organic materials leaving a smaller footprint on the earth and are less harmful than plastic, because they are less durable, and should biodegrade.

An eco-friendlier alternative

Our customers can choose between classic style paper straws or PLA biodegradable straws.

Both straw types will break down naturally and comply with any current council and event site mandates regarding biodegradability.

Beer gardens expected to be back open in April

Beer Garden Catering Supplies In Lockdown

Pubs and restaurants could be able to serve outdoor meals and drinks in April, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced in his four-step “road map” on Monday.

The PM said from 12 April, Brits will be able to meet in beer gardens with the Rule of Six or a larger group of no more than two households.

This will be followed by the opening of pubs and restaurants indoors on 17 May, with social distancing restrictions remaining in place.

Unlike before, however, there will be no curfew, or substantial meal rule, but customers must remain seated and not order at the bar.

Other venues due to open on 12 April include non-essential retail, hairdressers, salons and attractions such as zoos. Gyms will also reopen, although indoor mixing will not be allowed.

The prime minster stated that the lifting of restrictions will be made on the latest data at every step outlined in the road map.

Hygiene guidance for food deliveries in lockdown

Good practices for good hygiene

Delivery and takeaway businesses remain open during England’s lockdown.

But with the need to prevent the spread of coronavirus (covid-19) and maintain good hygiene, it is vital that business owners take the correct precautions.

Please find guidance below, as advised by the Food Standards Agency.

Cleanliness

The Food Standards Agency advises that businesses do the following:

  • Utensils should be cleaned before each usage.
  • Hands must be washed thoroughly.
  • Ingredients and prepared foods should be stored separately.
  • Ingredients that contain allergens should be separate from other ingredients.
  • Takeaway meals should be labelled clearly so customers know which dishes are suitable for those with an allergy.
  • Food must be stored in sealed containers and at the correct temperatures.

Food delivery

Food businesses should also identify and remove possible cross-contamination risks in the delivery process.

  • All food must be delivered in a way that ensures that it does not become unsafe or unfit to eat. Food must be kept secure such as inside leak-proof food boxes. This helps avoid any risk of cross-contamination.
  • Food that needs refrigerating must be kept cool while being transported.
  • Food that needs to be kept hot should be packed in an insulated bag.
  • Allergen-free meals should be kept separate to avoid contamination through any spillages.
  • It should be clear which container an allergen-free meal is in. A note or sticker can be used to make the customer aware.

Lockdown deliveries: 5 catering supplies to get you through

With more people stuck at home due to the COVID-19 outbreak, there has been a surge in demand for food delivery services.

And since social-distancing measures forced restaurants and bars to close earlier this year, business-owners have switched to delivery to stay afloat during the pandemic.

Here at Inn Supplies, we’ve seen an increase in demand for disposable catering supplies. And for that reason, we have grown to become a key supplier for thousands of businesses across the UK during these times.

Here are five catering supplies to help you get through lockdown.

1. Food/noodle boxes

Food/noodle boxes

Our food boxes are ideal for takeaway and food-to-go businesses. They are suitable for a wide range of food, most commonly used with noodles, Indian takeaways, and salad portions.

All boxes are made from thick virgin-grade raw materials, approved for use in microwaves and leak-proof.

Great for: Takeaway food, hot food such as noodles and cold food such as salads.

2. Deli soup cups

Deli soup cups

Suitable for storing soups, pasta and ice cream, our paper soup cups are both microwave and freezer-safe.

All soup cups offer matching lids to keep food from spilling. Heavy duty cups offer a thicker material to store hotter foods and protect fingers from heat.

Great for: Hot and cold soups, snacks, pasta and dessert portions.

3. Insulated cups

Insulated ripple cups

Coffee shops and drinks caterers make great use of our ripple insulated cups.

The unique ribs form a barrier of protection between the heat and hands, and even help keep drinks hotter for longer. Choose from black, brown and white colours with sip-thru lids to fit.

Great for: Coffee, tea, hot cocoa and other hot beverages.

4. Takeout pint cups

Takeaway pints

Our plastic pint cups have been popular with pubs, bars and hospitality venues who have chosen to offer a takeout option during lockdown*.

We have also added lids to fit certain sizes of cups. This helps keeps drinks within the cup and prevents spillages. It also makes for a great takeaway drink for customers.

Great for: Takeaway pints.

* Please refer to the current lockdown rules in your area.

5. Wooden cutlery

Wooden cutlery

An alternative to plastic cutlery, wooden cutlery has become an increasingly popular option for takeaways.

Ethically-sourced from well-managed forests, each piece is made from virgin grade birch wood. Cutlery packs are also available, making it easier to store cutlery and avoid unnecessary contact.

Great for: All takeaway food.

Inn Supplies find the UK’s most and least loved takeaways

It’s fair to say the UK nation craves a takeaway every now and then. So, the team at Inn Supplies has pulled together a list to crown the UK’s most loved takeaways. We will also be exploring the least loved takeaway options.

How did we discover which takeaway is the UK’s favourite? After conducting a sentiment analysis, we have determined the most popular takeaways per region. To do this, we gathered data from TripAdvisor regarding the positive words that were used in reviews for different takeaways to calculate an overall sentiment score.

Sentiment score values the emotion displayed in each TripAdvisor review, so zero is extremely negative and 100, the maximum, is extremely positive. We compiled a data set to provide a score for each region of the UK’s feelings towards different types of takeaway cuisines.

Most Loved And Least Loved Takeaways By City

Some of the results have definitely surprised our team, with a number of less commonly talked about cuisines appearing to be a hit with the UK nation.

Our data finds that Lebanese takeaways has one of the highest sentiment scores of 80.02, with national dishes including kibbeh and tabbouleh satisfying the nation’s cravings. Luton in particular shows the greatest love for this cuisine, scoring a sentiment of 98.4.

Of course, the UK’s adoration for Indian style cuisines has scored a high sentiment of 71.22. It has always been a popular go-to for those cosy takeaway nights in front of the television. This is especially evident in Cambridge, where Indian takeaways score the highest sentiment of 81.1. Although, Southend appears to have a different preference when it comes to Indian food, scoring the lowest sentiment of 63.9.

Caribbean food is found to satisfy the tastebuds of those in the Liverpool area the most, with a sentiment score of 98.4 for these dishes.

Gaining status for being Poole’s most favourite takeaway cuisine is Mediterranean, with a sentiment score 97.7. On the other hand, those in Bristol don’t seem to take a liking to this style of food, with a relatively low sentiment of 50.

Chinese food continues to be a cuisine the nation craves, scoring an overall sentiment of 65.77. If you’re visiting London anytime soon, be sure to try a Chinese takeaway – here, this cuisine scored the highest sentiment of 93.4.

With Italian dishes being a popular go-to for many of us, we found out just how much the UK nation adores these scrumptious dishes. With a sentiment of 98.1, Wolverhampton leads the way with loving Italian takeaways the most. Derby, however, doesn’t appear to share the same adoration, with the lowest sentiment score of 12.6.
